Moving in Richmond: a city of neighborhoods, each with its own parking problem
One of our managers has lived in Church Hill for over a decade, so this section comes with a bias: Richmond is a city of neighborhoods, and where you land decides how your move goes. The Fan and the Museum District are the cultural heart, rows of turn-of-the-century houses on narrow, permit-parked streets with tight staircases, where a 20-foot truck and a temporary no-parking zone from the city are the right tools. Church Hill is a bit more spacious, and still has some deals for those looking to rent a single-family home with some older style. Scott's Addition, Manchester, and the emerging Diamond District feature a lot of new apartment builds with garages and elevators, and tight parking. Check to see if your apartment building has a loading zone or requires a COI.
Downtown and Shockoe Slip towers like Vistas on the James load from the Canal Walk side with a coordinated loading zone, and downtown parking is metered, so a temporary loading permit saves time. The West End, Short Pump, and Glen Allen are family neighborhoods with driveways and ample parking, and Midlothian, Chesterfield, and Bon Air across the river are the same, with the Powhite and Chippenham parkways as potential traffic chokepoints.
The calendar has two spikes. VCU turns over the Fan and the blocks along West Broad in the week before fall classes in mid-August, and again in May, so book those three weeks out. Capital One's West Creek campus, CarMax, and Dominion Energy bring steady corporate relocations into the city all year, and VCU Health brings a lot of residents into Church Hill and Shockoe Bottom.

Do I need to provide a truck?
Yes, we are labor-only. The U-Haul on West Broad Street is about two miles from the Fan, Scott's Addition, and downtown, and it is the natural pickup for most city moves. We name the size, and for the Fan and Church Hill we will usually say 20 feet. We can book it for you.
Is there anything your movers won't move?
Especially heavy or bulky safes and pianos are best left to movers who specialize in those items. Keyboards, obviously, aren't an issue. Gun safes and firearms are best left to you. Contractually, our movers won't touch them.
