What to know about moving in Orlando
Orlando's moving logistics are shaped by two forces that don't exist in most cities: a massive university calendar and one of the world's largest tourism ecosystems. University of Central Florida move-in day (mid-August) is one of the largest single-day student moving events in the country, UCF has over 70,000 students, and the apartment complexes along Alafaya Trail and University Boulevard are completely committed 4-5 weeks in advance. If you're moving near UCF before the school year starts, book by July 1. For Central Orlando, Thornton Park, Mills 50, Ivanhoe Village, and College Park, apartment buildings with elevators require advance freight elevator reservations. Most buildings allow moves 9am-5pm and limit elevator usage to 2-3 hour windows; contact building management to reserve your slot as soon as you have a date. Winter Park is more accessible but has specific quirks: Park Avenue and the surrounding streets have time-restricted loading zones (30-minute limit during business hours) and the residential neighborhoods north of Rollins College have significant tree canopy that limits clearance on some blocks. International Drive and the tourist corridor create a reliable traffic pattern: theme park shift changes at 7am and 3pm cause significant volume on I-4, particularly between SR-528 and downtown. Any move that crosses the I-4 corridor should be scheduled to avoid these windows. For moves to Lake Nona, the fastest-growing neighborhood in Orlando, home to Lake Nona Medical City and USTA, newer construction means good truck access, but HOA communities in this area have moving hour restrictions (typically 8am-6pm weekdays, limited weekend access).
