What is moving in Knoxville like?
Knoxville is in large part a college town, and so a substantial part of its rhythms are dictated by the University of Tennessee. Fort Sanders, the Cumberland Avenue strip, and the student blocks west of campus turn over almost completely in the week before fall classes, and graduation weekend in May gets pretty busy for us. If your date falls in either window, book as far out as you can. The other factor that can impact your move is the UT football schedule. On home-game Saturdays from September through November, Neyland Stadium can draw 100,000 people into the same blocks, Cumberland Avenue and Fort Sanders parking is restricted, and a truck that could stage on Friday cannot on Saturday. We schedule around it, but tell us the date so we can check the kickoff.
Knoxville is in Appalachia, and so you should expect a bit of a bumpy landscape. Sequoyah Hills and Bearden are older neighborhoods with real hills, steep original driveways, and narrow interior staircases, so a 20-foot truck and an early start beat a 26-footer parked at the bottom of a slope. Downtown and the Old City are 1920s warehouse conversions - usually buildings like this may warrant a reserved elevator and a Certificate of Insurance from your mover. Fountain City and North Knoxville are a bit easier to move in and out of, with ranch houses and ample parking.
Growth is pushing west. Farragut and Hardin Valley along Pellissippi Parkway are HOA subdivisions with long carries from the curb and newer garages, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory keeps a steady flow of scientists and engineers relocating in and out of Oak Ridge year-round, without much seasonality. I-40 and I-75 meet in Knoxville, which is why one-way U-Haul trucks are always available here and why cross-town moves along I-40 through downtown are best started before 7am on weekdays.
