What to know about moving in Charleston
Moving on the Charleston Peninsula, especially in the Historic District, South of Broad, and Ansonborough, requires advance planning unlike anywhere else in the Southeast. The City of Charleston requires a moving permit for any truck over 20 feet operating in the Historic District; apply through the City's permit office at least 10 business days ahead. Many South of Broad homes are on streets where no off-street truck staging exists at all: your crew will stage on the street itself, which means coordinating a temporary no-parking zone with Charleston Parking Authority. We handle this for all Peninsula moves. Historic buildings in this area often have interior stairways that were built in the 1800s, tighter than modern construction, lower ceiling height on landings, and occasionally spiral layouts. Walk the route before move day if possible and let us know anything unusual. King Street and Meeting Street corridor apartments typically have loading zone access in the back via narrow alleys; some buildings limit truck length to 22 ft at the rear entrance even though the front street permits 26 ft. For James Island, West Ashley, and Mount Pleasant, all more accessible, the key constraint is bridge and connector traffic. The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge between Mount Pleasant and downtown backs up reliably between 7-9am and 4-6:30pm on weekdays. A cross-bridge move that takes 15 minutes at 6am takes 45+ minutes at 8am. We schedule cross-peninsula moves to start before 7am or after 7pm whenever possible. College of Charleston and The Citadel move-ins happen in late August and are booked 5-6 weeks ahead. MUSC residents and fellows move year-round as match placements don't follow a calendar.
