Frequently Asked Questions
Have Questions? We Have Answers!
We charge a simple, flat hourly rate. Get your instant online quote to see the rate for your location and reservation date. The clock starts when the Undergrads arrive at your starting location and stops when your move is complete.
We have a 2-hour and 2-Undergrad minimum on all moves.
We DO NOT provide or drive the moving vehicle. Find a moving vehicle easily in your area using our truck finder, here.
Undergrads provides the most valuable resource for any move: the muscle! Our strong and capable student movers will handle all the lifting, carrying, and loading/unloading you need.
Sometimes you need equipment! For specialized moving equipment (like dollies, hand trucks, moving blankets, etc.), we recommend customers rent these items directly from their truck rental provider (such as U-Haul). This ensures you have the exact equipment you need for your specific move, without any extra cost for items you might not use. It creates a more seamless experience, as you can pick up and return everything in one convenient location. We’re happy to advise on what equipment might be helpful for your move when you book with us.
When it comes to packing for your move, having the right supplies makes all the difference. We recommend picking up everything you need from trusted local providers like U-Haul, Lowe’s, or Home Depot so you’re fully prepared on moving day.
Here’s what you might want to grab before your Undergrads arrive:
- Assorted Moving Boxes: Choose from small, medium, and large boxes for everything from books to bedding. Specialty boxes—such as wardrobe boxes for clothing and dish packs for fragile kitchenware—can also make packing a breeze.
- Packing Tape: Good-quality packing tape keeps boxes sealed and your belongings secure throughout the move.
- Bubble Wrap & Packing Paper: Protect delicate items like glassware, electronics, and keepsakes by wrapping them with bubble wrap or packing paper.
- Moving Blankets & Pads: Essential for protecting furniture and large items from scratches during transport. (These can usually be rented or purchased directly with your moving truck.)
- Stretch Wrap: Handy for bundling loose items, securing drawers, or keeping larger pieces together.
- Markers & Labels: Don’t skip labeling your boxes—your future self will thank you!
Let us know if you’d like advice on the right packing supplies for your move. We’re here to help you make sure everything is safe, organized, and ready for a smooth transition.
We have a vast network of students covering a large majority of the United States. We operate in all surrounding areas within about an hour of our service locations.
If you are a little outside of our service location, we can still do your move. We will just have to charge a slight fee to pass along to the movers for their time in transit.
We accept all major credit cards at the conclusion of your move. We do NOT accept cash or checks.
Yes, all Undergrads are university students!
Absolutely – we are licensed and insured!
We facilitate many commercial moves—ranging from student housing turns, turn furniture installation, and office furniture installation. Check out our commercial moving page for a better outline of our capabilities!
While we’re happy to tackle just about anything heavy, there are several items that moving companies—including us—aren’t able to transport for safety and legal reasons. Here’s what you should plan to move yourself or make other arrangements for:
- Hazardous materials: Items such as gasoline, propane tanks, lighter fluid, fireworks, fertilizers, and household chemicals (like bleach, paint thinner, or cleaning supplies) can’t go on the truck. These items are flammable or potentially dangerous and need to be handled separately.
- Machines with fuel: If you need to move your lawn mower, snow blower, or any other motorized equipment, please drain all gas and oil before move day.
- Perishable or temperature-sensitive goods: Fresh, refrigerated, or frozen foods can spoil quickly and are not allowed. Plan to use, give away, or transport these items yourself.
- Live plants and pets: For the well-being of your furry (or leafy) friends, pets and plants cannot be transported. Trucks can get hot or cold and do not provide good ventilation—please bring these with you in your personal vehicle.
- Valuables and important documents: For your peace of mind, items like cash, jewelry, essential paperwork, family heirlooms, photographs, and prescription medications should always travel with you.
If you’re unsure about a specific item, just ask when booking—we’re glad to help you plan ahead!
Some things are simply too important or irreplaceable to trust to anyone else—including our strong and trustworthy Undergrads! We recommend that you personally transport your most valuable and sentimental belongings, such as:
- Cash, jewelry, and watches
- Irreplaceable photographs or family heirlooms
- Important documents—think passports, birth certificates, and legal papers
- Prescription medications you might need access to during the move
Basically, if it’s something you can’t imagine losing or can’t easily replace (or if you know you’ll need it urgently on moving day), keep it with you. The same goes for items with significant sentimental value—even if they’re not valuable in dollars and cents, their peace-of-mind value is huge.
Not sure what to take? Ask yourself: “Would I be upset if this was lost, delayed, or hard to replace?” If the answer is yes, it’s a good candidate for your personal “do not pack” bag.
Yes, there are certain items we’re unable to move for safety reasons. While our team can handle just about anything, hazardous materials must sit this one out.
Items we cannot move include:
- Flammable, explosive, or corrosive substances (think: gasoline, paint thinner, fireworks, or acids).
- Equipment powered by gasoline—like lawnmowers or snow blowers—unless their fuel tanks have been completely drained before moving day.
- Fertilizers or chemicals labeled as hazardous.
- Fire extinguishers, car batteries, other large batteries, or propane tanks.
- Common household cleaners or bleach when labeled hazardous.
If you’re ever unsure about a specific item, just let us know when you book—our team is happy to clarify or help you plan. For more information or a detailed list specific to your area, reach out to your booking coordinator.
We know moving day often involves more than just boxes and furniture—sometimes you’re also wondering what to do with your beloved monstera, a fish tank, or even the contents of your fridge. Here’s what you need to know:
Living things (plants and animals):
Moving companies, including us, are not able to transport live plants or animals inside the moving vehicle. This is due to both safety and comfort concerns—the interiors of moving trucks can become very hot or cold, and there’s often limited air circulation during transit. To keep your pets and greenery healthy, we recommend making alternate arrangements, such as transporting them in your personal vehicle, or enlisting a pet transport service if needed.
Perishable foods:
Movers also aren’t able to transport perishable goods—think anything refrigerated, frozen, or easily spoiled. Food can quickly go bad during the move, which isn’t pleasant for anyone (especially on a hot Columbia afternoon). Your best bet? Try to use up your perishable foods before moving day, and plan to move any leftovers yourself or give them away to neighbors or a local food pantry.
If you have questions about other unique items or need recommendations for safely moving sensitive possessions, we’re happy to help!
If you need to move lawn equipment, snow blowers, or any gas-powered machines, make sure you prepare them in advance. We ask that all fuel tanks are fully drained before moving day to ensure the safety of our student movers (and your belongings) during transport.
Pro tip: Most local truck rental providers such as U-Haul will accept drained equipment, and you may find helpful tips for safely emptying gasoline from owner’s manuals or reputable sources online.
If you have more specific questions about prepping unique equipment, just let us know when you book your move—we’re always here to help you plan ahead!
