To us, it’s so much more than just moving. We are dedicated to providing each and every one of our customers with an incredible experience while empowering students to develop their skills as responsible leaders, team members, and professionals.
2017: The concept became a reality
While studying industrial engineering at Clemson University, Chris Dyer and Thomas Mumford were desperate for a class schedule-friendly way to make money.
They did some research and discovered that people needed reliable moving labor and enjoyed supporting local students at the same time. They posted an ad on Craigslist, and to their surprise, people started calling.
2018: Student Movers Service was born
The labor-only moving concept took off, and soon enough, Chris and Thomas couldn’t keep up with the work. They recruited friends and quickly built a team of movers, calling themselves Student Movers Service. But there was a problem: they were set to graduate in December of 2017 and start full-time jobs across the country.
Rather than give up on the dream, they managed the company remotely while working their other full-time jobs.
2019: A year of growth
Despite Chris and Thomas working from separate cities, the company grew rapidly. The number of moves completed more than tripled, and over the summer they had a team of 300 students working.
In August, it led a three week-long move into the largest student housing project in the US. It was clear to Chris and Thomas that this was no longer just a side-gig.
2020: The transition to Undergrads
After two years of working remotely, Chris and Thomas decided it was time to go all in on Student Movers Service. They left their full time jobs at the end of 2019 and moved back to South Carolina to grow the company out of Chris’ mom’s attic.
The first big change of 2020 was to rebrand Student Movers Service to Undergrads – a name they feel more closely aligns with the company’s goals and values.

We have hired this company twice, and would hire them again in a second! On both occasions, the guys were super polite and professional and showed up on time/early. The second instance was an all-day move that involved multiple trips between two houses to move a LOT of stuff, much of it quite heavy. These guys worked tirelessly for as long as we needed them. They are worth every penny, and the rate they charge is extremely fair!
